Ingrid Ludt to exhibit playful paintings drawn from nature in Beyond Matter, a solo exhibition at the Bromfield Gallery
BOSTON, August 20, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Beyond Matter, Ingrid Ludt first personal exhibition at Boston, consists of paintings which abstract pieces of the universe to free them from the burden of representation. Colors and shapes drawn from nature are transformed into play pieces in elaborate studio games. The exhibition will be open from September 1 to 26, 2021, with a reception opening on Friday September 3 of 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bromfield Gallery.
The compositions are drawn from pieces of bark, seashells and other natural ephemera, then carefully arranged to meet the rectangle of the canvas. The patterns and geometries of the fragments of nature are refined and rendered on the canvas. In some cases, the universe can be found in a single fragment; in others, the pieces are put together to reveal some sort of secret.
The colors, meanwhile, are chosen by chance and games: picking from crumpled samples, assigning colors to the dice and drawing tarot cards. Ludt is inspired by the irreverent anarchism of the Dadaists in the early 20th century, who worked in the midst of war and disease, much like the 21st century. Ludt’s response, like the Dadaists before her, is to put playfulness and chance at the forefront. The lightness and the pleasure of the process are palpable in the paintings, where the shapes radiate the colors assigned to them.
This is the serious business of the game: to expel the inner critic, energize an artistic practice, counter the harsh realities of the day and connect with the universe. It is this act of discovery, both by Ludt and the viewer through the paintings, that connects us to something bigger, Beyond Matter.
