NORWOOD, NJ – On Wednesday, March 2, Sterling Associates will bid farewell to winter with an auction of 171 lots of fine art and home decor, antiques and mid-century modern furniture from estates from the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area. Bidders can participate away or live online via LiveAuctioneers.

The long list of auction highlights includes a stunning Dahlov Ipcar oil painting of an African animal scene, a bronze “Kang Tao” coffee table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, a Steinway grand piano from 1926 and a cold painted Austrian bronze and glass by Franz Bergman. lamp. A specialist collection of 15 mid-Victorian portrait miniatures is also included.

From the first hour of its appearance in Sterling’s online catalog, the Dahlov Ipcar painting was already attracting acclaim from potential bidders. Ipcar’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and other institutions. His large and impressive oil titled Cherangani (referring to a hilly region of Kenya) is an exciting depiction of African animals in a landscape typical of the artist’s “kaleidoscopic” style. Painted in 1989, the 48 x 40 inch painting is signed and dated, and bears an artist label on the reverse which documents the title and date of creation as well as a description (“oil on Belgian linen”) and price original fixed sale price of $9,000. It is offered at Sterling Associates auction with an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.

“For years Dahlov Ipcar’s paintings usually sold for $3,000 to $4,000, but she was increasingly discovered by collectors, and now her paintings can fetch $20,000,” said Stephen D’ Atri, owner of Sterling Associates.

Other works worthy of special mention are three botanical depictions by Joseph Stella (Italian/American, 1877-1946). His creation in pencil and pencil on paper titled flower study is estimated between $1,000 and $2,000. In addition, there is a fine oil-on-panel portrait of a young, clean-shaven Abraham Lincoln by Franklin C. Courter (American, 1854-1947). Courter painted a number of portraits of Lincoln, several of which are in the collection of the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The auction entry is inscribed “19” on the reverse and has a framed size of 30 by 36 inches. It is expected to fetch a price between $3,000 and $5,000.

An exotic lamp in bronze and cold painted glass by Franz Bergmann (Austrian, 1861-1936) is titled The Prince and the Mandolin Player. It is an example par excellence of Bergmann’s style, which mixes oriental themes with romantic or animal figures. Standing 21 inches tall (31 inches with its vintage brass base included), it is up for auction with an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000.

A very different but equally collectible type of lamp offered for sale was made by America’s oldest glass company, Pairpoint. Known as Pairpoint’s “Puffy,” it’s branded inside its etched, enameled, and gold hue and should easily hit its $500-$700 estimate. Another coveted lot in the lighting section is a Handel “Ivy” table lamp with a hand-numbered and signed brass-edged mosserine green six-panel shade. It stands on its correct, signed base and, like the Pairpoint, should sell for between $500 and $700.

Crafted by father and son designers Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, a ‘Kang Tao’ coffee table or coffee table is crafted from bronze and has a weathered mixed metal top richly adorned with a Chinese court scene. This coveted mid-century piece is signed on its top and will cross the auction block with an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.

If anything adds an instant feeling of elegance to a room, it’s a grand piano like the Steinway Model M that graces Sterling Associates’ End Of Winter Estates auction. Accompanied by its tufted piano bench and bearing the serial number 243899, the piano can be dated to 1926 – the height of the ultra-elegant Gatsby era. The Steinway awaits the chance to entertain its new owner with a Cole Porter tune or two and is estimated to be between $6,000 and $8,000.
