The Scorched-Earth Gallery trial everyone in the art world is watching

… Speaking of Kendall Jenner’s taste for art, she Instagrammed this week from the Broad, the late Eli Broad’s private museum filled with masterpieces. “Damn…. So sick” commented her sister, Khloe Kardashian, on an Instagram post from Ellsworth Kelly’s Green Blue Red (1963). Perhaps the extended family is gearing up for more art shopping at Frieze Los Angeles, coming next week.

…Lisson Gallery, the long-standing business that opened in London’s Lisson Grove neighborhood 55 years ago, will expand to Los Angeles later this year. Led by the Executive Director Alex Logsdail, Lisson West will plant his flag in Hollywood at 1037 North Sycamore Avenue, near LA outposts of other New York gallery empires such as Jeffrey Deitch and Matthew Marks, as well as local Angeleno outfits such as Morán Morán and Matthew Brown. Hauser & Wirth’s West Hollywood outpost, complete with restaurant!

… For the first time since February 2020, Zona Maco held a full fair in Mexico City, filling the Centro Banamex convention center with dozens of gallery booths, and the aroma of carne asada emanating from the taco stands in the atrium . Highlights around CDMX included new work from Stanley Whitney at the southern border outpost of Stockholm’s Galerie Nordenhake, Kenny Riveroat Morán Morán’s posh Polanco neighborhood gallery, and the weekly Friday lunch at Contramar, so essential to the city’s contingent of art dealers that it’s legitimately bad to linger. Judging by experience, this lunch should end around 7 p.m.

…and we conclude this model-heavy edition of the Rundown with one final observation: Bella Hadid spent a day at Dia Beacon this week, obviously enjoying the Sam Giliam works from the permanent collection of the Upstate Museum.

Scene Report: The Upper East Side in February

The fanciest part of Manhattan is usually a bit deserted at the start of the year. Even when he was mayor Michael Bloomberg was known to emerge from his mansion at 17 East 79th Street on Fridays in time for dinner at Greg’s Steakhouse in Hamilton, Bermuda, just two hours away on a private flight. Every February, Larry Gagosian is more likely to be spotted on Flamands Beach than on his perch at Kappo Masa. And about Abby Rosen, the king of uptown luxury condos? He is currently in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, wearing cowboy hats and eating ice cream.

But downtown still had some energy this week, thanks to the new working exhibition of Charles Ray at the Met, a jaw-dropping survey that has led a decidedly non-touristy crowd to the grand dame of American museums since it opened in late January. A walk around the neighborhood then included a late afternoon stop at Bemelmans Bar, early enough to avoid the new Gen Z customers making TikTok. And afterwards, there was a stop at the Madison Avenue boutique, Venus Over Manhattan, where the owner Adam Lindeman was installing a show of, sigh, NFT, although some look quite intriguing made by someone named Snowfro, which apparently sold for around $3 million each. And then a few days later, Almine Rech opened an exhibition of new paintings by the young British artist Sarah Cunningham, large-scale abstract works that took him almost a year to complete and hosted a celebratory dinner across the street in Sant Ambroeus. Of course, there are branches of the Milan-by-way-of-Manhattan standard south of the Upper East Side – in the West Village, SoHo and Tribeca, as well as in the southernmost part of the city. at Q1, Palm Beach. But the Madison Avenue branch still rules, even in the quieter months.
